The DAISY Foundation Award (Diseases Attacking the Immune System) honors nurses who provide extraordinary clinical skill and compassionate care. Established by the DAISY Foundation in 1999, it is a deeply meaningful way for patients, families, and coworkers to express gratitude for nurses every day.

The award was created by the family of J. Patrick Barnes, who passed away at the age of 33 from an autoimmune disease. During his hospitalization, his family was profoundly touched by the clinical expertise, compassion, and kindness shown by his nurses. In their honor, they established the award to recognize these often “unsung heroes” and to ensure nurses everywhere know how valued and appreciated they are.

We are extremely proud and honored to announce the recipients of the DAISY Award at Big Bend Regional Medical Center — Kari Renfroe and Leslie Flores — for the extraordinary compassion, dedication, and care they demonstrate each and every day.

We would also like to recognize and celebrate all of this year’s nominees for their outstanding commitment to our patients and community:

  • Melody Hornady, AGACNP-C
  • Isabella Morales, RN
  • Yolande Jurado, RN, CNO

Thank you all for the exceptional work you do day in and day out. Your compassion and dedication make a lasting difference in the lives of our patients, families, and fellow team members.

In Addition, we would also like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the patients and family members who took the time to submit nominations and share their stories about the meaningful bonds they created with our nurses. Thank you for the opportunity and privilege of caring for you and your families.
